In 1938 Austria was annexed into the Third Reich. In 1934 the Chancellor of Austria was assassinated in a Nazi plot, having himself destroyed the only force within Austria of resistence to the Nazis, the Social Democrats. He eliminated them with one wing of the fascist movement while the other plotted his downfall.
