In the first of his new series exploring these cross-currents, John Surman looks back at the music of Sidney Bechet , Jelly Roll Morton and Duke Ellington. He also talks to Norwegian singer Karin Krog about folk influences that go back to the twenties, and percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Trilok Gurtu describe some of the traditional instruments that bring new tone colours into jazz.
