by Anton Ehrenzweig
The abstract painter of today likes to think that the realistic art of the past tied the painter to copying his perceptions of nature. The recently published book by Professor E. H. Gombrich , Art and Illusion, analyses this widespread misunderstanding of traditional art. Mr. Ehrenzweig thinks that it may help the modem painter to take heart and assist him in the development of a new representational art which can be discerned in current trends of abstract art.
