The bandleader Sun Ra (Herman Blount ) was famous for his exotic headgear, and for his Solar Arkestra, claiming that his inspiration and music came from outer space. Yet beneath the exotic image, Ra was a highly creative musician, redefining the structure and sound of the jazz big band, and developing a pool of musicians whose individual voices are among the most distinctive in the genre. Author and critic Brian Morton joins Alyn Shipton to select the essential examples of Sun Ra's work.
