A small group of Confederate troops plan a daring undercover raid a thousand miles behind the Union lines.
The story is based on an actual incident in the Civil War, and Van Heflin plays the major who leads a handful of men in an attack on a small Vermont town -an attack which involves many tense and exciting moments.
