Homer's Ulysses was always homeward bound, in contrast with the outward - bound Byronic wanderer of the Romantic tradition. Many later writers including Charles Lamb and James Joyce preferred the Homeric portrait, but transformed it into an allegory of everyman on the voyage of life. Reader michael mcclain
