William Bergsma, who was born in California in 1921, studied under Howard Hanson at the Eastman School of Alusic; in 1945 he was awarded a grant given by the National Institute of Arts and Letters for ' outstanding achievement.' Descendant of a long line of Italian musicians, Norman Dello Joio was born in 1913 in New York; he has studied with Hindemith, and, like Bergsma, has won a number of prizes. Charles Jones settled in New York in 1928 after spend- ' ing the first eighteen years of his life in Canada; among the musicians to whom he is most indebted, he says, are Aa.ron Copland and Milhaud.
