So Jeremy Collier , attacking the ' profanity ' of the London stage at the end of the 17th century, described ' dramatic opera,' then so popular. Collier was particularly severe on Purcell's King Arthur. This talk describes the rise of dramatic opera and the sudden fall when Italian opera was introduced at the beginning of the 18th century.
