visits the Outward Bound School at Aberdovey to mark their 40th anniversary and to meet some of those awarded the Radio 1 Outward Bound scholarships.
The young people chosen are currently on a ' personal development ' course lasting three weeks. Senior Warden Ian Fothergill explains that there are courses running all year for those between the ages of 16 and 20. ' They may be bank clerks or engineers sponsored by their firms as an additional part of their training. Or they may come in a private capacity but most important to the scheme is the mixture of backgrounds. While here they work in small units so they learn about communication. We think of ourselves as a " people centre ", with the challenging outdoor activities of sailing, canoeing and rock climbing serving as a means to building up one's self-esteem and confidence.'
