The 20th Century Remembered

on BBC One London

by Barbara Castle with Donald MacCormick
In 1967 Harold Wilson 's Cabinet faced a serious economic crisis which led to the devaluation of the pound. Barbara Castle was in that Cabinet and she recalls the secrecy surrounding economic decisions, which meant that she and her Cabinet colleagues were often shut out from any discussion of the economic situation. In the third of four programmes she reflects on perhaps the most dramatic year of her life, when she introduced In Place of Strife, her White Paper in favour of a new legal framework for trade unions and employers. This not only divided the Cabinet but met with stiff opposition from the unions. Research MONA ADAMS VALERIE SMITH
