Live from Television Centre, the very best of the year's sporting action, drama and entertainment. In the studio, are the British sportsmen and women who have made the headlines in 1985, one of whom will receive the trophy as Sports Personality of the Year. The programme also includes, from Mexico City, details of the draw for the 1986 World Cup.
Among the contenders for tonight's award are:
STEVE CRAM, winner in 1983, who broke three world records in 20 days of middle-distance running this summer.
DENNIS TAYLOR , who won a marathon world snooker final well after midnight.
SANDY LYLE , the first British winner of the Open for 16 years, who then helped bring back the Ryder Cup.
PAT JENNINGS , who with his Irish teammates restored some of football's image, and booked a Mexico trip at the age of 40. LESTER PIGGOTT , who called it a day in 1985 after a lifetime of classic racing success.
David GOWER , who captained England to an Ashes victory in fine style, and teammate IAN BOTHAM , who helped demolish the Aussies, and walked the length of Britain for charity.
BARRY MCGUIGAN , who thrilled millions by winning the World Featherweight title on a memorable evening last June.
The programme also recalls how a 17-year-old, Boris Becker , conquered
Wimbledon, and how
Alain Prost won the World Drivers'
Championship at last.
