When Lord Mountdrago exchanged the lonely eminence of the Foreign Office for a psychiatrist's couch, it was in the hope of discovering some explanation for a series of shameful and ridiculous dreams that had lately disturbed his august slumbers.
Were these hallucinations the result of his own guilty conscience, or was he haunted indeed by the plebeian ghost of the man whose political career he had so cruelly and ruthlessly destroyed?
