The Queen Mother

on BBC Radio 4 FM

Born 4 August 1900
A radio biography in three parts in celebration of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother's 80th birthday.
Written by MARGARET FORSTER
Narrator Virginia McKenna Part 3
King George V wrote to his son the Duke of York a few days after his marriage to
Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, 'I trust you both will have many, many years of happiness before you and that you will be as happy as Mama and I are after you have been married for 30.' The marriage was indeed happy, but the heavy burden of kingship contributed to the tragically early death of George VI in 1952, less than 30 years after his marriage. Since then Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother has continued to play a leading part on the royal stage, a part that has won her the ever increasing love and admiration of millions of people the world over. This programme tells the story a remarkable woman, with contributions from some of the men and women who have played a part in it, as well as recordings of great royal occasions.
