Janacek 's brooding, tragic opera, Katya feels she's fading away in the house of her weak husband, Tichon, and his fearsome mother Kabanicha. Katya has a fling with Boris during Tichon's absence, but on his return she confesses everything out of shame and drowns herself in the Volga.
