George Eglin is a Lancashire journalist who is at present serving in the National Fire Service. A keen music lover, one of his most heart-rending blitz experiences was to fight a warehouse fire in which thousands of gramophone records were in danger of going up in smoke. Eglin and others had methodically to hurl symphonies, sonatas, and concertos from a third storey to the ground below.
