It Was More Fun by Boat

on BBC Radio 4 FM

On 17 October, the English cricket team will set off for Australia from Heathrow Airport; their journey will be dull, routine and quick. But for 101 years from 1861, the trip was a slow and arduous one by boat, as detailed in the diaries, memoirs and reminiscences of players who undertook the journey, including Compton, Hobbs, Graveney, Ranjitsinhji and Trueman, and journalist John Woodcock.
