One Sunday morning, Ned Merrill appears in swimming trunks beside the pool of some former friends in suburban Connecticut - and decides to swim home across the country via the pools of acquaintances along the way. At first he is greeted enthusiastically as a long-absent friend, but increasingly along the journey he is met with hostility and then bewilderment.
