Composer of the Week: Brahms

on BBC Radio 3

4/5. By the time he was in his mid-40s, Brahms was becoming an extremely famous composer. The city of Leipzig devoted an entire week to performances of his music and academic institutions heaped honours upon him. Donald Macleod introduces the celebratory overture that was the result of one such award and two pieces that came about through his love and affection for two of his dearest friends.

Academic Festival Overture - Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor Leonard Bernstein

Rhapsody in G minor, Op 79 No 2 - Martha Argerich (piano)

Concerto in A minor for violin and cello - Itzhak Perlman (violin), Mstislav Rostropovich (cello), Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, conductor George Szell
