THIS Overture, like the Scots Symphony, was the outcome of a tour in Scotland which
Mendelssohn made in 1820. In a letter to his family he says: 'In order to make you understand how extraordinarily the Hebrides affected me, the following came into my mind there.' He then quotes the first twenty-one bars of the Overture, which was not completed, however, until the next year while he was in Italy.
