Introduced by Kate Bolton. 5: An Abundant Shower of Tears
William Lawes 's tragic death at the siege of Chester in 1645 inspired odes and elegies by many contemporary composers and poets. This final programme includes his brother Henry's lament Cease, 0 cease ye jolly shepherds and his poignant setting of Imbrae lachrymarum largo, with consort music by the cavalier composer himself, whom Charles I remembered as "the father of Musicke".
