4: Seven against Christ
In 1860, seven men set out, in a volume of essays, to bring together the old teaching of the Church and the new learning of modern scholarship. What resulted was the loudest outcry to arise in the Victorian Church, and the essayists were branded ' septem contra Christum ' - seven against Christ.
