John S. Hoyland is a son of the late John William Hoyland , who was Chairman of the Selly Oak Colleges. He is lecturer at Woodbrooke Settlement, Birmingham, which is a Quaker International College. He was for some years in charge of a college for Indian students in India, and since returning home has been taking a prominent part in organising scheme under which undergraduates and public school boys go to the depressed areas, live in the homes of unemployed as paying guests and work with them. His publications include ' Digging with the Unemployed ' and two books on India.
