Mr. J. B. TREND : 'Spain '
MR. J. B. TREND has an intimate knowledge of Spain. After the war, lie was for a year correspondent there of the Athenœum, and lie has travelled extensively in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with intervals of musical criticism in London: Particularly interesting is his connection with th" Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, a Spanish residential university college which is run on English lines. There he has met informally most of the members of the new Republican Government. He is a great authority on Spanish music, and an intimate friend of the modern Spanish composer, Mannol do Falla, of whom ho published a life recently : he has also written on Music of Spanish History,' ' Spanish Madrigals,' and on Spanish music generally in the Oxford History of Music. Besides these and other musical works, he has published several books on Spain generally, such as ' A Picture of Modern Spain ' and ' Spain from the South.* His descriptions of Spanish customs and festivals are first hand, and he knows a great deal more about them than the average Spaniard.
