Cocaine Country
Presented by Fred Emery
Bolivia is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its one growth industry is cocaine, on which the peasants survive and the business barons grow rich. Last month a new government came to power, backed by America. But the price of Washington s help is a crackdown on the drug already used by millions of Americans and spreading alarmingly.
David Lomax has penetrated the intrigue of Bolivia's cocaine world. Tonight he reports on the progress of that crackdown, and on how the old guard are waiting for an opportunity to strike back.
