A famous composer, Gustav von Aschenbach, comes to Venice Lido weary and dispirited, for a holiday. Among the hotel guests he sees a boy who seems to embody the beauty, grace and harmony he has been seeking all his life. When a cholera epidemic strikes the city, von Aschenbach doggedly stays on, unable to leave while the boy remains.
