' Beating the Boundary '

on Regional Programme Midland

View in Radio Times

A Commentary on this historic event will be relayed from Hereford
It is just one hundred years since the commissioners appointed to inquire as to the existing state of Municipal Corporations in England and Wales conducted their investigations at Hereford and reported on the boundaries of the city, its constitution, customs, powers, administration and general amenities. It is thought that this present year would, therefore, bo a good opportunity to celebrate this centenary by reviving the old custom of ' beating the bounds.' The procession, headed by the Mayor and Corporation, will start from the High Town. Following a fanfare of trumpets, the proclamation will be read, and the several parties deputed for the ' beating ' will depart to perform their task cheered by the townsfolk.
