Unsung Heroes

David Jacobs introduces a six-part series in which the BBC Big Band, conducted by Barry Forgie , salutes the unsung heroes of popular music - the arrangers.
Tonight, the writing of Billy May , who began his career as a young trumpeter and arranger for the bands of Charlie Barnet and Glenn Miller.
He formed his own band in the 50s featuring "slurping saxes", which became his trademark, before continuing his career in the film and recording studios. Here he collaborated most notably with Frank Sinatra.
