1/5. In 1919 Ralph Vaughan Williams , nearly 50, was demobilised from the British Army, in which, as a medical orderly, he acquired a "vivid awareness of how men died". Then began a prolific decade of work, in which the expressive range of his music expanded, and his compositions explored new depths of visionary, mystical ardour.
