The wave of previously banned books and films coming out in the Soviet Union today is the result of a potentially far-reaching policy of cultural liberalisation introduced by Mr Gorbachev. However, those who lived through a similar cultural relaxation under Mr Khrushchev in the 1950s recall that such improvements can be limited and temporary.
