The fourth of a 25-part series
Michael Craig continues the saga of the instigators of musical entertainment in the USA. This week: The Shuberts
Part 1: SAM, LEE, JAKE (J.J.)
LARRY ADLER : I don't think anybody liked the Shuberts-they had a kind of disregard for people. They didn't care about people's feelings or self-respect.'
JOHNNY MERCER : ' They were always cutting corners-cutting expenses. The joke about the Shuberts was that they used the scenery from the last show for the new show, they just changed the title. They ran their theatres like a dime store.'
BROOKS ATKINSON : ' Strangely enough they lived on opposite sides of the street, Lee was on the north side of the 44th street, and j.j. was on the south side and they didn't speak. That's what I'm told. But they must have spoken-after all there was a lot of money involved.'
