LIKE nearly all Russian plays, The Artist has a wistful sadness and ends on a note which leaves the listener wondering how it will all turn out in after years. Tchekov is one of the best-known of the Russian playwrights, but his appeal is limited in England, at any rate to lovers of the drama.
