Spain 1808, and in Napoleon's Peninsular Campaign the forces of Marshal Messena are cut off from the main French army. Napoleon plots to divert the English by letting a false message fall into their hands, choosing as his courier the brave and boastful Colonel Etienne Gerard.
Jerzy Skolimowski 's version of this Arthur Conan Doyle story gives a new dimension to its conceited hero.
