Andrija, a friendly and simple-minded lifeguard at a remote lake in Yugoslavia during the last summer of the Second World War, is in danger of losing his job because he's never had the chance to save anyone. But his life is thrown into turmoil when he rescues a drowning man and becomes hated by the locals.
