This winter Glyndebourne's Jane Glover and Martin Isepp went to Peking to prepare the Peking Central Opera for Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.
Working through interpreters was difficult enough but the company had little experience of 18th-century western opera. So there were some formidable obstacles to be overcome in teaching so alien a style, and moving towards the first performance of a Mozart opera ever to be performed in China. But as the musicians from east and west worked together over several exhilarating days, it became clear that there were exciting possibilities about 'Figaro' in Peking.
