Anthony Ashley Cooper (Lord Ashley was his title before he became seventh Ear! of Shaftesbury) was a fighter all his life. He fought against the cruelty of the asylums; he fought for the children in the factories; he fought against the dirt and disease of the sJums; he fought for vagabonds on the streets, for the sewing girls in the tailors' cellars, for the chimney climbers, for the women and children labouring in the coal mines. He fought and he never gave up.
