The Mastersingers-the fine inspiration with which the young knight Walter won in competition the hand of the maiden he loved.
On the night before the contest ho had a vision of a sunlit garden and of Eva hersalf. Out of that vision the song grew. We may well regard it as almost an ideal one-strong, clear in outline, sweeping broadly and surely on to its climax.
