The tramp steamer was a legend of rust, soot. decks awash and dirty, smelly cargoes bound for steamy or icy ports. The liner was a legend of Metro-Goldwyn-Baroque d6cor, blazing lights. haute cuisine and triple expansion engines 40 feet high. The legends were not too far from reality.
