The Great Stars: The Decks Ran Red

on BBC One London

The Great Stars of yesterday and today in a season of their most memorable films
[Starring] James Mason
with Broderick Crawford, Dorothy Dandridge
Written and directed by Andrew Stone

Captain Rumill is given command of the SS Bericind, a rusty old freighter, and takes over in a mood of resentment and unrest, which is further increased when he sails from New Zealand with a Maori cook and his extravagantly beautiful wife. This explosive situation is exploited to his own ends by an unscrupulous deck-hand, Scott, and his mate, Martin. They plan to murder the entire crew and then claim salvage money for the ship. But the best-laid plans can go awry... This suspenseful thriller keeps up its pace throughout, and James Mason gives his usual highly polished performance as the captain. Dorothy Dandridge who became famous following her role in Carmen Jones is suitably sultry as the cook's wife.
