Acting on Mr. Ackroyd's orders, Philip Bellinger has again tried to get certain papers from Martin-and this time has succeeded. But he is prevented from reaching Gossington Hall, and in the ensuing fight Philip saves Martin's life. While Martin and Joanna are sheltering at the ' Black Swan ' they discover a purse belonging to Sir Charles Bellinger. The landlord confesses that Sir Charles was robbed-on Ackroyd's instructions.
