Most people think of Japan as an urban, industrial country, whose economic success has made her one of the richest nations in the world. In many important ways, however, life in Japan is still an extension of life in a Japanese village -villages like Kurotsuchi, a prosperous farming community which still retains many of the characteristics of traditional Japanese society.
