1942. Northern Australia is under threat. To stem the Japanese tide, Australians are fighting in the jungles of Papua and the US Marines on Guadalcanal.
The Japanese are fighting with fanatical courage. This is to be the pattern now, as the American war machine advances on Japan.
Tonight Michael Howard analyses the conflicting views on which enemy should be fought first, Germany or Japan. And he also introduces startling film of the land and sea battles.
