Measuring the Mind

on BBC Radio 4 FM

in two programmes, Dr Raj Persaud examines how we measure intelligence.
1: IQ- the Numbers Game. Do you know your IQ? If so, what does that number really mean, and can it be used to predict yourfuture? One of the first people to examine differences in intelligence was the Victorian scientist Francis Galton. His theorythat human beings differed in intellect or ability was revolutionary, even to his cousin, Charles Darwin.
No one now doubts that people differ in intelligence but do attempts to measure IQ achieve any positive results? Believing that IQ counts could be increased, during the seventies, the Ministry of Intelligence in Venezuela undertook an extraordinary programme which attempted to increase the intelligence of the whole nation - but did it work?
