Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), if he had lived at any other period in the history of music, he would undoubtedly have been hailed as a remarkable phenomemon: a brilliant pianist whilst still a child, a pupil of Mozart, later a prolific composer, and Haydn's successor at Esterhaz. But inevitably, surrounded by such contemporaries as these two, as well as Beethoven and Schubert, he was relegated to Division Two.
This week's programmes assess his promotion chances.
