Sir John McEwen 's reputation as a composer has perhaps been somewhat eclipsed by his academic distinctions. We think of him too much as the Principal of the Royal Academy of Music, too little as the virile, individual composer he is, the greatest living Scottish musician and a musical ' nationalist' of the best type.
McEwen's so-called ' Little Sonata ' is the fourth of his violin sonatas, it was written in 1913-14 and is, despite its name, by no means a miniature work. The title refers to the simplicity of its themes and their handling. But the Sonata is not at all simple to play !
