Widowed after a rather dull marriage,
Alice Hyatt decides that life may pass her by. She is
35 attractive and resilient, has a 12-year-old son and no money. She decides to sell up home, head for Monterey and take up her old profession as a singer. Her journey, adventures and romance provide the eventful narrative to this moving and richly comic film.
Ellen Burstyn won an Oscar for her performance, and the movie helped establish the reputation of its director, who also made Taxi Driver and The Color of Money.
