Uncle Varick
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Anton Chekhov , Radio 3 presents acclaimed Scottish playwright John Byrne 's new version of Uncle Vanya.
It is the mid-1960s and Uncle Varick and his niece Shona are running an estate in the remote north-east of Scotland for the benefit of Varick's brother-in-law, the literary critic and TV pundit Sandy Sheridan. But when Sandy decides to retire to the estate with his young wife, Elaine, the lives of the inhabitants are thrown into disarray. Varick's own crisis drives the action to a darkly comic, tragic finale.
