Film Matinee: The Barefoot Contessa

on BBC One London

Starring Humphrey Bogart, Ava Gardner
Harry Dawes, a fading Hollywood director, discovers flamenco dancer Maria Vargas in a tawdry Madrid nightclub and turns her into a star. Maria, however, soon tires of the tinsel world she has conquered.
Bogie gives a remarkable performance as the cynical, down-at-heel director and Ava Gardner co-stars as the barefoot dancer.
Edmond O'Brien won an Oscar for his performance as the aggressive press agent.
