Suddenly One Summer

on BBC Radio 4 FM

In the summer of 2001, wildlife cameraman Ian McCarthy travelled to Afghanistan, not on the trail of animals but to film material for a television programme about the country's remote lapis lazuli mines, thought to be the oldest gem mines in the world. During the trip he kept this audio diary, only weeks before the events of 11 September focused the world's attention on Afghanistan and its people.
