Ellesmere is a local authority home for the elderly in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, London. During the last two years its staff have been taking a fresh look at every aspect of its organisation - at the way, for instance, the accommodation is arranged, the daily routines are carried out and decisions are taken. Harry Thompson reports on how far they have succeeded in turning an institution for 95 senior citizens into a place like home. and examines the dilemmas facing people dedicated to maximising the comfort and contentment of the aged in their care.
