3: Innocence Sacrificed
The stories of Idomeneus and Jephthah, the one from classical legend, the other from the Old Testament, are closely related. Each warrior vows that, if successful in battle, he will sacrifice the first creature he meets on his return home. The tragic consequences may be heard in two of the most powerful operas of the pre-Ramiste period - Campra's
Idomenee and Monteclairs Jephte. Excerpts from both are performed by William Christie and Les Arts Florissants.
Plus Monteclair's Pyrame et Thisbe sung by Monique Zanetti (soprano), Jean-Paul Fouchecourt (tenor) and Jean-Francois Gardeil (baritone). Repeated from last Wednesday
